Chapter 33

Brian knew what he had to do. He just didn’t know if he had the nerve to actually go through with it. He silently cursed himself for letting Kelly put him in this situation. But he really felt he had no choice.

Nervously he paced on the manicured lawn behind the Ned McWherter Library at the University of Memphis and waited. Several lights on campus flickered to life as darkness quickly approached. Brian consulted his watch. Five ‘til eight. Now was the time.

He strolled through the library’s large automatic doors, across the large, circular lobby, caught the elevator to the second floor and stepped out. Just as he had predicted, the librarians manning the information desk had already gone home for the night and the floor was sparsely populated.

Cool beans, he thought.

He quickly moved toward the computers on the far wall. There, he logged onto the Internet, typed in the letters R-O-L-E-X on the Yahoo search engine, and seconds later, he was at the prestigious watchmaker’s web site.

Using the information his Indian friend Rom had obtained for him, he carefully typed in Allison Bruin’s Visa Gold credit card number and promptly ordered two solid-gold, diamond-studded Rolex watches—one for him and one for Rom—to be sent to a FedEx drop box at the Embassy Suites in East Memphis. Brian smiled when the screen confirmed his order. Total price: $18,667.

Confident no one was watching, he made it back outside just the way he came. All according to plan. Minutes later, he ran across Central and disappeared into the darkness.
